IT MAY BE HOT OUTSIDE NOW, BUT WHAT IS THE PREDICTION FOR THIS WINTER?

The Farmer’s Almanac has come out with its long term predictions for the upcoming win-ter. According to the farmer’s “Secret Formula” the prediction is that the country will be largely snowy and really cold. New England is predicted to have below-normal temps and above-normal snow levels. (Can we really top last years’ levels?) An editor from the Almanac stated that “everybody who gets snow will have a white Christmas”. Maybe you believe this and maybe you don’t…but better have your snow blower tuned up and a shovel handy just in case.

Speaking of tune ups – now would be the time to schedule a tune up on your heating system. It received a real work-out last season and could probably use a little boost. This service is part of your “Comprehensive Comfort Plan”. So please call us @ 781-834-8831 so we can schedule this service for you. Your heating system will thank you!

NEWS FLASH: NATURAL GAS LEAKS ARE EVERYWHERE

A recent Boston Globe article talks about the poor condition of the state’s aging natural gas pipelines and how they are full of leaks. These are not only dangerous, but they pose a tremendous environmental risk as well. One study reports about 20,000 dangerous leaks which have been estimated to cause the rate payers/ homeowners more than $1 Billion. “The leaks are potentially explosive, kill trees, harm human health, and release an extraordinarily destructive greenhouse gas. To add insult to injury, we ratepayers have to pay for the lost gas.” (Audrey Schulman, Home Energy Efficiency Team, Cambridge). O

fficials at the utility companies said they are working as fast as possible to plug the leaks. By law, they are required to repair immediately leaks

that pose a risk of explosion or any leaks on streets under construction, near school zones, or around trees that appear to be dying. However, most utilities allow the leaks to seep indefinitely because they don’t see them as an imminent threat. Natural gas is mainly composed of methane, which traps heat and is 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide, meaning small amounts can have a significant impact on global warming.

When you look at all of the facts, does Natural gas really make sense for you and your family? It sure doesn’t make sense to me.

SERVICE TIPS:

If your heating system shuts off due to a power outage or malfunction, the reset button may help get it started again by resetting the burner’s controls. Before you press the reset button, follow these steps FIRST, and you may not need a service call. After each of the following steps, listen to hear if the burner comes on.

  1. Check the oil burner switches. Are they on? There is one usually at the top of your stairs or somewhere outside of the boiler room with a red faceplate. There is also one on the side of the heating unit itself.
  2. Check the thermostat. Is it set above room temperature? If its an automatic setback thermostat, try changing the batteries.
  3. Check the circuit breaker and see if the switch has “tripped”. If it has, push the switch off and then back on again. (Or check for a blown fuse in an older home)
  4. Check your oil tank. Does it have oil in it?
  5. Try pressing the reset button on the burner, ONCE. This is usually on top of a control on your burner.
  6. If you have tried all of the above, and the burner still doesn’t come on, call our office. If it is after hours, your call will be directed to our answering service and they will forward the information to the technician on call.

As school begins again, we want to remind you of the return of the yellow school bus to our roads. Please use caution when on the roads and look out for not only the children, but for other vehicles as well. Especially the impatient driver that may not stop, or may try to pass a bus at an inappropriate place.
